Chapter Fourteen

SINCE I NO LONGER HAD a house to go home to, Ginger and I checked into a local hotel. After spending an exorbitant amount of money on a last-minute flight, and after eight hours of traveling and a jump in time zones, I knew we needed an inexpensive hotel and one we could get into fast before we both dropped from exhaustion. It was more of a motel, a single-story, older structure set on the beach and jammed between the monoliths cropping up around it. But it was clean, and they accepted dogs.

Although we had no concrete information to lead us to believe the amulets were somewhere near San Francisco, we all agreed that with the focused tidal incidents in the area, it was the best place to look.

The room had only a queen bed, but I knew Ginger would crawl into my bed anyway. I didn’t think dogs could sweat, but after spending days jammed into a car under the scorching desert sun and then sitting in an airplane, she was just plain stinky. I didn’t mention this to her as she curled up next to me. I was two days without a shower and assumed I didn’t smell much better.

Our flight got in late, too late to search for any answers. We curled up in bed. Ginger immediately fell fast asleep. She snored softly next to me. I stared at the hotel ceiling, the lights from the passing cars running across the far wall. I willed my mind to calm, for me to drift off into a blissful sleep along with my dog companion, but instead, my mind swam with overbearing thoughts.

I closed my eyes against the onslaught of emotions. I hadn’t asked to be a witch. I hadn’t asked to be Santa’s granddaughter. I had been thrown into a life I didn’t understand. And now I was tasked—by a magical being I never knew existed—to save the world. I snorted, the sound pervasive in the otherwise quiet room.

I wasn’t made to be a witch. I didn’t want to be a witch. I pulled the pillow over my face, willing myself to fall asleep.
